Feeling down? You’re not alone! It happens to everyone—from the most successful people in the world to the ones at the bottom of the barrel—and often, it hits when you least expect it. Although nothing can actually make you instantly feel better, there are plenty of steps you can take that will help improve your mood and snap you out of whatever funk you find yourself in. From taking a walk outside in nature to watching something funny, here are 10 ways to instantly boost your mood.

1) Count your blessings

1. Notice the people in your life that love you and remind yourself of the ones who care about you.

2 2. Express gratitude for all that you have right now. 2 3. Journaling can help heal a broken heart. It might take time, but there is healing in the words that you write down on paper and nobody can take them away from you ever again- even if it’s one word at a time. 4. Cut down on the things that bring you to stress: do not allow negative or draining people into your life. 5. Make a conscious effort to stay positive- focusing on what went well today or what will make tomorrow better rather than dwelling on what didn’t go as planned or didn’t happen as expected today. 6. Drink lots of water; get outside and spend some time in nature; dance!

2) Take a walk

Walking or running outdoors is a great way to improve your mood, get exercise, and benefit your mental health. Don’t have time for a full workout? Take a brisk 10-minute walk. A study from Stanford University’s Calming Technology Lab showed that participants who took walking breaks during an 80-minute repetitive, monotonous task significantly improved their moods and had better focus than those who didn’t take any breaks.

3) Add some colour to your life

● Work up a sweat. Sometimes all you need is a little physical activity to feel refreshed. If it’s not possible, head to the gym and use that endorphin rush as a mood booster.

● Remember happy memories. Ponder times when you were feeling on top of the world and find ways to recreate those moments. Getting in touch with your happiest memories will give you the inspiration and motivation you need right now!

● Gather around some friends.

4) Listen to music

Music is a powerful tool that has been shown to help improve physical and mental health. Studies have found that listening to music can reduce stress levels, improve mood, and increase happiness levels. The bottom line is that you should never underestimate the power of good tunes. Put on your favourite song or playlist and enjoy!

5) Smile more often

A big step in boosting your mood is smiling. Smile often and give the people around you a reason to smile too. Smile even when you don’t feel like it. You will start feeling better very quickly! The next time you’re feeling down, smile for at least 10 seconds straight. After 10 seconds, check how you feel again. If that doesn’t work, try it for 30 seconds or a minute instead.

6) Exercise

Exercise is a great way to boost your mood. Not only does it give you more energy, but it also makes you feel good. Think about what type of exercise you enjoy, then head out and get your heart rate up! Just try not to overdo it at first. Take deep breaths while you work out, or think happy thoughts. Do whatever works for you- the important thing is that you’re doing something that’s good for your mental health.

7) Use humour wisely

As someone who suffers from depression and general dissatisfaction with life, I know how difficult it can be. Sometimes, you just need a pick-me-up that doesn’t require leaving the comfort of your bedroom. Here are 10 quick things you can do right now (in order) that may get you out of a funk:

1) Check out one of your favourite songs/sing along. Singing releases endorphins and leaves you feeling happier. It’s scientifically proven! Plus, listening to music is an excellent distraction for those with depression because it helps them forget about their own problems for a while. For example, my favourite band is Metallica and whenever I listen to their song The Unforgiven, I feel better in no time. Why not sing along?

2) Find a funny video on YouTube or watch an episode of Friends or Seinfeld. What could be more satisfying than laughing at something ridiculous?

8) Talk about things that make you happy (not the bad things!)

2. Hanging out with your friends

3. Surrounding yourself with things that make you happy and make you feel accomplished

4. Going outside for a walk on a nice day

5. Listening to your favorite song 6. Watching a movie or TV show

7. Eating something you love, like chocolate!

8. Doing something creative

9) Nurture relationships

Your relationships should be your number one priority. Relationships are our roots and when we take care of them, we end up happy and fulfilled. Talk with those you love on a daily basis and thank them for being a part of your life. Try to show appreciation for what they do rather than what they don’t do. It doesn’t matter if it’s your kids, friends, or partner; it is essential that you foster these relationships so that in the future, you know where to turn for support.

10) Go outside

Step outside for some fresh air and get some sunlight. Even five minutes can make a difference in your mood. If you’re worried about getting too cold, bring a light jacket or sweatshirt with you! Get moving: Exercise is one of the best ways to relieve stress. If you need help, check out our blog post on exercise motivation for tips! Find a buddy: Have someone go with you when exercising or even just going outside–even if it’s just as simple as meeting up at the same time!
